As the run-in kickoff in Europe’s top five leagues, potential champions are already emerging in many of the leagues, with several defending champions keen on retaining their titles, while new faces vie for the climax in other leagues.

The Premier League could crown a first-time winner in more than two decades while familiar faces have already lined up in the other leagues, with PSG and Bayern Munich more importantly flexing their dominance of Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga respectively.

It is at that stage of the season when the nerves start to set in, fatigue starts to take its toll, and relegation candidates start to dent blows, all factors that influence title races by crushing dreams in endless drama.

From the Premier League to Ligue 1, we rank the teams likely to be crowned champions by the end of the season in May, taking into account their current status, history, and the road ahead.

  1. Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga

The Bavarians are well on course to retain the Bundesliga title having distanced themselves from the chasing pack in recent weeks with convincing performances as well as an important Der Klassiker win over their closest rival, Dortmund.

Bayern Munich are the runaway leaders in the German top flight with nine more points ahead of second-place Dortmund, and with eight games before the league concludes, they look unstoppable, as they have always been in the league.

Vincent Kompany’s have been dominant all season, setting a new record for the best start to a Bundesliga season, while also beating previous records for most goals scored at certain stages thanks to the form of their attacking trio.

While Harry Kane has been banging in the goals, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise have also been firing on all cylinders, with French playmaker Olise well on course to set a new record for most assists in a single season for a European club.

Despite having to deal with a series of injuries, Bayern Munich has been a step above the rest in the Bundesliga, and at this stage, can be said to be the team with the best possibility of being league champions in Europe’s top five divisions.

  1. Inter for the Scudetto

Inter had their 10-point lead over second-place Milan reduced to seven after their narrow defeat in the Milan derby, but stretched their lead to eight despite a draw in the Lombardy derby, while Milan lost at Lazio.

Cristian Chivu’s team ranks second on the best chances of winning the league in the top five divisions and will most likely dethrone Napoli to claim their second Scudetto in three years after missing out last season.

It was a very competitive race at the start with others like Milan, Napoli, Juventus, and even AS Roma, staying in the chase, but their inconsistencies have been key to Inter’s breakaway, and now it’s the Nerazzurri’s title to lose.

With no European commitment after the embarrassing loss to Bodo Glimt in the Champions League elimination playoff, Inter’s full focus remains on the Serie A, and even though this is a sentiment shared by their rivals, the margins have become too great to overcome.

  1. PSG to retain title against inexperienced Lens

Luis Enrique and his team must be delighted that RC Lens is the team closest to them in the Ligue 1 title race as the inexperience of the latter has helped Les Parisiens keep their place on the summit despite not being at their best.

They have lost points in the most decisive games, but the failure of Olympique Marseille and Lyonnais to mount a genuine charge has left the Ligue 1 no option but to immediately crown the same team as champions for the fifth year running.

But the LFP has also made it easier for the European champions to maneuver, especially amid congested fixtures, when they play on the continent, by helping postpone their games to have enough time to prepare and recover.

This is a privilege their counterparts from other top European leagues do not enjoy, and it played a great part in their conquest last season, and may become decisive again in the ongoing campaign.

Despite establishing a 5-2 first-leg win over Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16, PSG was not in action during the weekend as their meeting with Nantes was postponed to a later date, for the players to get ready for the trip to London.

Despite now having a game in hand, Les Parisiens were able to maintain their one-point lead over RC Lens, who fell at Lorient, and with eight games to go, PSG’s run-in strength and experience in title races will be monumental, but the same can not be said of their rivals.

Ranked as the third team with the best chance of becoming league champion in Europe’s top five leagues, Paris Saint-Germain have been here, and almost every time, the result does not change.

  1. Barcelona to weaponize Clasico and edge Madrid LaLiga race

It has been a cat-and-mouse race for the LaLiga title this season between the Clasico rivals, but every time Barcelona has the edge, it gets very difficult for Real Madrid to catch up, and with a four-point lead now, it may well be game over.

Barcelona are more likely to retain the LaLiga title at the expense of second-place Real Madrid, who have remained very inconsistent since their first league defeat of the season against Atlético Madrid.

Barcelona, who claimed the previous title in Hansi Flick’s debut season have chosen the Clasico as the fixture that makes the significant difference between the two sides, and with a visit of Real Madrid to Camp Nou still to come, a league coronation come May seems inevitable.

Despite the form of Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Jr., the record European winners have had to deal with a series of injuries to important players like Jude Bellingham, as well as almost their entire defense.

Although they have injuries of their own, Barcelona has benefitted from the brilliance of Lamine Yamal and summer signing Joan Garcia, who has kept the joint-most clean sheets in the league so far.

Barcelona’s chances of reclaiming their title rank fourth in Europe’s top five leagues, making three of the four teams likely to retain the league titles won last season.

  1. Arsenal to seal a deserved Premier League title

Arsenal’s wait for a first league title since their invincible campaign 22 years ago is becoming more realistic by the day, especially after a dramatic weekend that saw them move nine points clear of Manchester City with seven games left.

Mikel Arteta’s team has been the best English team by some distance this season, and despite Pep Guardiola’s €100 million investment on winter signings, his City team isn’t just the same it used to be.

The Gunners boast the best attack and defence, while their ability from set-piece situations is beyond ordinary. They have suffered just three losses in almost 50 games, and only once have they conceded more than 2 goals in more than 120 games across all competitions.

Having finished runner-up in the previous three campaigns, it appears the North Londoners have learned their lessons, and have acquired the needed mentality to stay grounded amid the chaos around them.

Despite never winning the league, the team literally boasts better title race experience than City, which has lost many of their veterans in a new team dominated by recent signings.

While defending champions Liverpool have been blown away by the storm, the probability of Arsenal getting it over the line couldn’t be any higher, especially with City looking lost and lacking in belief.

With the two teams set to clash in the Carabao Cup final this weekend before another battle at the Etihad after the March international break, the next month would definitely be decisive in deciding whether power will ultimately switch hands in the English top-flight.

Nevertheless, given history and the nature of the Premier League, the chances of Arsenal winning the league rank least at this stage, of any of the likely champions in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
